The Shell Trinidad and Tobago Ltd. (STTL) national STEM programme, which aims to strengthen the energy sector’s talent pipeline and the country’s effort at economic diversification by enhancing critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving through strengthening awareness, competence, and delivery of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) within the educational system, has since been expanded to focus on Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STREAM) .
As an operational partner of the STREAM programme, the National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (NIHERST) is required to focus its collaborative initiatives to deliver on enhancing awareness and interest in STREAM subjects and transforming attitudes towards STREAM careers, thus future-proofing our nation.
One key inititative under this programme is the National STREAM Workforce Report, which highlights the gaps in the STREAM workforce and provides crucial information for students and young adults on potential careers. This report will be delivered to stakeholders in the form of an interactive conference.
The objectives of the National STREAM Workforce Development Report are to:
- Create an employment profile of STREAM graduates from public universities by examining demographic characteristics, academic qualifications, job mobility, income level, sector of employment and job satisfaction;
- Determine industry needs by examining the size, range and scope of the sector; workforce composition and participation; and job market trends and needs;
- Provide data on the issues related to broadening participation in STREAM education and STREAM workforce development;
- Investigate current trends in STREAM employment including comparison of STREAM occupations and non-STREAM employment;
- Provide career maps aimed at students interested in pursuing STREAM careers;
- Conduct mapping of the policies and practices that support the ecosystem for STREAM;
- Highlight successful strategies and policies of selected countries and how they have integrated STEM into their curriculum or national development priorities with recommendations on how their approach can be applied in Trinidad and Tobago.
The findings of this report will be presented to 100 secondary & 100 tertiary students through the STREAM Workforce Conference which will feature a tour of STREAM career exhibits & relaxed dialogue between students and a panel of government and industry stakeholders.
