About the Scholarship
Shell NXplorers is the flagship Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STREAM) programme of Shell Trinidad and Tobago Ltd. (Shell). The Shell NXplorers Programme, which is implemented in 18 countries around the world, is an educational programme designed to help young people develop critical thinking and creative problem solving skills throughout their school and professional lives. The expectation is that they will use these skills to transform their communities and country. NIHERST has been the delivery partner for the Shell NXplorers Programme in Trinidad and Tobago for the last four years.
Shell Trinidad and Tobago is proud to announce the launch of its NXplorers Energy & Innovation Academic Scholarship 2025 a ground breaking initiative designed to empower the next generation of leaders and innovators in Trinidad and Tobago. As part of Shell’s commitment to fostering education and national development, this scholarship provides financial support to exceptional students pursuing tertiary education in key fields that align with the nation’s developmental goals and Shell’s vision for a sustainable future.
Two (2) academic scholarships valued at TTD$35,000 each will be awarded in 2025 only.
Eligibility Criteria
The programme is open to students who:
- Are citizens of Trinidad and Tobago
- Have completed the Shell NXplorers Programme in Trinidad and Tobago (past or current cycles)
- Can provide evidence of Enrolment or acceptance to an accredited local/regional tertiary institution for 2025.
- Have a current minimum GPA of 3.0, if applicable
- Intend to pursue or are currently pursuing a major in a Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STREAM) discipline (undergraduate/ graduate level).
Eligible fields of study include:
- Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum, Renewable Energy, and related fields).
- Environmental Sciences and Sustainability.
- Information Technology, Computer Science and Data Analytics.
- Medical Science
- Agri-Business
- Geographical Studies for Sustainable Development

- Applicant’s essay (750 word document, detailing how will the scholarship benefit the applicant)
- Statement of support (this letter of recommendation should emphasize the applicant’s academic achievements, interest in STREAM, 21st-century skills, and well-rounded development) who can provide this statement (i.e. teachers or professors etc?)

Terms and Conditions
Scholarships are to be used towards tuition and school fees. Considerations may be made to apply scholarship to other school related expenses such as books and other specialised learning resources (including specialised laptops, software, lab equipment), housing and insurance.

Obligations of the recipient:
- Scholarship recipients are required to provide proof of payment to the educational institution.
- Scholarship recipients are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Scholarship recipients are required to submit status updates of exam results each term and proof of enrolment and good academic standing with learning institution.

The Shell Energy and Innovation Academic Scholarship is open to past and current participants of the Shell NXplorers Programme (tertiary level only).-

- Can the scholarship only be used to cover tuition and school fees? If my full tuition is
already funded (e.g GATE) can the scholarship funds be utilised towards other school fees e.g. books, housing?
Considerations may be made to allow for payments other than tuition and school fees at the discretion of NIHERST and Shell. - How will the scholarship funds be disbursed?
Students are to provide proof of the amount to be paid for tuition and school fees. NIHERST will make direct payment to the institution and provide proof of payment to the scholarship recipientStudents are to provide proof of the amount to be paid for tuition and school fees. The successful scholarship recipients should receive payment only after submitting proof of the amount to be paid. This amount will be paid before it becomes due to the institution. - How many disbursements will the scholarship recipient receive?
If the tuition and fees to be covered is under the scholarship amount of TTD$35,000, additional disbursements may be made for the duration of the course of study up to the full scholarship amount of $TTD35,000.00. The recipient must maintain and show proof of the minimum 3.0 GPA each academic term, provide proof of enrolment and good academic standing with learning institution each academic term and continue to pursue a STREAM discipline. - Will the scholarship be renewed?
No, this is a one-time scholarship that will not be renewed.
