The Government of Trinidad and Tobago recognises the strategic role of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) in a modern competitive economy and has aspirations that this country would become more effectively integrated into the global economy by developing a diversified, sustainable, knowledge-based economy and a highly trained and adaptive workforce in the 21st century. In order to realise these aspirations, investment in the development of a top-quality STI system and a scientifically literate population is essential. The on-going production of knowledge, its commercialisation and technological skills are also necessary for achieving competitiveness and improvements in the quality of
life.
To assist in the realisation of government’s developmental objectives, NIHERST has been given a mandate in Science Popularisation & Promotion.
Under this mandate NIHERST, with the support of the
National Gas Company of Trinidad &
Tobago (NGC), has established the National Science Centre which houses various science exhibits for viewing by members of the public.
The centre is also responsible for organising various outreach programmes with the aim of promoting scientific and technological concepts using non-traditional teaching
methods.
NIHERST has also been charged with responsibility for the administration of the
Prime Minister’s Awards for Innovation and
Invention. This awards scheme seeks to encourage creativity among our citizens in the area of Science &
Technology.
The Science Communication Unit is responsible for
the production of multi-media public education and awareness
programmes in Science and Technology and other relevant mechanisms of
public interface for promoting S&T appreciation, literacy and a
national culture supportive of STI.
This section of NIHERST’s web site presents information on NIHERST’s activities in these areas and more importantly provides resources for teachers and activities and information for students and members of the public.

children participate in interactive multi-sensory, multiple
intelligence-based activities that lead to self-discovery about their
bodies. They also build an image of their individuality and their
relationship to society
