The festival of Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated by members of
the Muslim community on October 1st 2008, marking the end of one month of
fasting known as Ramadan. This celebration was also observed by the National
Science Centre, with a week-long focus on Islam and science in its visitor
rotations. Noting the particular practice of sighting of
the moon for the marking of the official date of the festival, the Centre
presented “Looking for the Moon”, a hands-on activity in our TechKno
Theatre. Here, visitors were able to become familiar with general appearance
of the various phases of the moon as it travels through the lunar cycle.
This was complemented by a star show in the Planetarium, in which particular
constellations visible in the October skies were showcased
