NIHERST/NGC National Science Centre celebrates International Year of
Astronomy 2009
One of the cornerstone projects of the International Year
of Astronomy 2009 is the 100 Hours of Astronomy outreach project. NIHERST,
in collaboration with CARINA, UWI and the Trinidad and Tobago Astronomical
Society, held a variety of astronomy activities over the period April 2nd
-5th at six different locations in the country. During these four days,
thousands of persons all around the world joined in by observing the wonders
of the night sky. For many persons, it was a welcomed opportunity to look
through a telescope for the first time. In addition to telescope viewings,
local patrons were treated to planetarium shows, workshops and giveaways. A
survey was carried out to determine how many persons took part in this
outreach project and how many used a telescope for the first time. Here are
the results.

This gives a grand total of 1,256 persons viewing through
a telescope during this outreach project for the International Year of
Astronomy, 100 Hours celebration. This includes the 903 persons (72% of
total the visitors) viewing through a telescope for the first time.
The next telescope viewing
will be held at Rose Park, Arima on 17th April 2009.
Time: 5 p.m. - 10 p.m.
The National Science Centre is open for regular visits Tuesday
- Friday, 9am - 4pm
